Is Your Corporate Social Responsibility Stuck in the Past?

Posted on August 27, 2019

In 2016, the number of women applying for jobs at Australian-based software company Atlassian stood at zero. Atlassian’s head of Diversity and Inclusion, Aubrey Blanche, knew that something had to change. Blanche, and others in D&I roles, know that there is two-way value in developing a diverse workforce. Research shows that gender diversity improves corporate performance as it creates opportunities for women, who are underrepresented in the tech industry.

The Stablizing Potential of Payroll

Posted on May 21, 2019

You’ve probably heard this statistic before: 40% of Americans don’t have enough savings to cover a $400 emergency.1 That number is repeated so often because it reveals how precarious finances are for millions of Americans, even those that seem stable and self-sufficient. We all know these kinds of emergencies will happen—the car needs a water pump, or the dishwasher breaks, or a pet gets sick—but too often we aren’t prepared to handle it when it does.

Thinking through Thought Diversity

Posted on March 12, 2019

What is the ultimate goal of diversity and inclusion work? Headlines are full of stories about underrepresentation and limited opportunity of women and minorities in the workplace. The #MeToo movement shed light on the ubiquity of the challenges working women face in every industry from tech to hospitality to manufacturing. The Black Lives Matter movement is bringing visibility to a breadth of issues for black men and women in America. Often the end goal is described as creating a more equitable society, where opportunity exists for all. But for employers, diversity goals need to be more concrete. As this field of practice has matured, they’ve started to see data around what works and what doesn’t.

Can the Right Employee Benefits Build Diversity?

Posted on February 26, 2019

We know that diversity brings both tangible benefits to the business, and also provides a positive impact for individuals, families, and the community. Among the ways that organizations typically pursue D&I is through the recruiting process, as well as in culture initiatives. Benefits are a key element of both of those processes and can have an impact on how the brand is perceived in the marketplace, as well as how employees relate to the organization.

Ignoring Inequality is Leaving Money on the Table

Posted on February 12, 2019

Addressing systemic inequality is usually framed as a philanthropic endeavour. The idea is simple: those with significant resources generously give money for the sole benefit of the disadvantaged. But in reality, the economics tell a very different story. A 2018 report by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and Altarum looked at the potential effect to the entire U.S. economy of eliminating racial disparities in health, incarceration, education, and employment.

Good News, Bad News: The State of the Practice of D&I

Posted on July 26, 2018

In June of 2017, Google released their numbers on diversity for the fourth year running. They cited progress, talked about key initiatives that they felt were making a difference in changing the demographic makeup of their organization. They announced a new VP of Diversity. Just two months later, an engineer at Google published an essay, claiming (among other things) that there were biological differences between women and men that made women less successful in tech roles. The essay went viral, and Google found themselves on the front page again, for all the wrong reasons.

Can Diversity Solve the Tech Talent Shortage?

Posted on June 26, 2018

The technology industry has been living with a perpetual talent shortage for as long as anyone can remember. InteropITX is an annual conference that brings together resources from across the industry, from vendors to practitioners in every sector, and across all company sizes. It is one of the last remaining independent conferences (vendors are there, but the conference isn’t put on by one specific company).

Too Elite to Compete

Posted on June 19, 2018

When Maria Nuñez went to the bank to apply for a home loan, she was nervous. Born in a tiny town in Puerto Rico, Maria had come to New York with her family as a teenager, eventually settling in New Jersey. Her parents had always been renters, but after a decade of steady work as a registered nurse, along with savings from her husband’s job as a welder, they had built up a nest egg and were ready to think about buying a house.
