Oumar and Flore* were newly married and needed to file their taxes together for the first time. Their Navigator worked with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program to offer free filing assistance.
The Navigator was able to save the couple $600 from their income tax preparation. Along with another VITA volunteer, they were also able to identify an exemption that Oumar qualified for, allowing him to claim a refunded portion of the American Opportunity Tax credit. This gave the couple an additional $500 to add to their tax return.
Next, the Navigator assisted them in planning out the coming tax year. Together, they worked through an online IRS withholding calculator to help ensure that the family’s monthly income remained high while still avoiding an amount owed and a difficult bill to pay come the next year’s tax time.
